Power of Words Breakfast – September 8th, 2015

PWC learners, volunteer tutors, and supporters; the Ottawa Public Library; Twice Upon a Time; and representatives from Employment Ontario employment service sites and Ottawa community resource agencies joined us to celebrate International Literacy Day, September 8. Volunteer Appreciation Event – April 14th, 2015

PWC’s annual Volunteer Appreciation Event didn’t disappoint. Many of our dedicated volunteers were on hand to receive our heartfelt thanks for the work they do throughout the year, tutoring PWC’s learners in basic reading, writing, math and/or computer skills. Thanks to the support of our very generous sponsors, we enjoyed a fantastic array of savoury snacks and sweet treats, and each of our tutors went home with a gift certificate or item as a token of our appreciation.

Power of Words Breakfast – September 8th, 2014

People, Words & Change once again celebrated International Literacy Day with the fifth annual Power of Words Breakfast. This upbeat and inspiring event was held in the new home of Heartwood House on McArthur Ave. in the bright and warm Unitarian Fellowship Hall. Our emcee, CTV Sports Director Terry Marcotte, guided us through the morning’s events which included moving, Now I Can! success stories from four of our learners.  [Read more…]

Volunteer Appreciation Event – April 10th, 2014

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you was the theme of this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Event, held on April 10. More than twenty-five PWC volunteers were treated to a delightful evening of storytelling, yummy nibbles and desserts, and, best of all, everyone went home with a gift donated by Ottawa people, businesses and services. A special certificate was presented to our volunteer Peter N. Roberts for his generous donation towards the establishment of the Peter N. Roberts Tutoring Room.

Power of Words Breakfast – September 6th, 2013

PWC’s fourth annual Power of Words Breakfast, celebrating the achievements of our literacy learners, was a great success. Master of Ceremonies CTV-Ottawa Sports Director Terry Marcotte led the way with charm and enthusiasm. Our special guest speaker, the Honourable Don Meredith, Senator for Ontario inspired everyone with his story of coming to Canada as an immigrant with few literacy skills at the age of 19, and the many challenges he had to overcome on his path to success. People, Words & Change is a non-profit, charitable organization providing opportunities for English-speaking adults in Ottawa to improve literacy, numeracy or basic computer skills which are essential to working, learning, and living. One-on-one tutoring is provided free of charge by volunteer tutors to meet the needs and goals of the learners.
